"Give Us Grace"

Give us grace, O God, to dare to do the deed
which we well know cries to be done.
Let us not hesitate because of ease,
or the words of men’s mouths,
or our own lives.
Mighty causes are calling us—
the freeing of women, the training of children,
the putting down of hate and murder and poverty—
all these and more.
But they call with voices that mean work
and sacrifices
and death.
Mercifully grant us, O God, the spirit of Esther,
that we say:
I will go unto the King and if I perish, I perish.

Worship

Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.

Quote by Amanda Berry Smith 1837-1915

"But I belong to Royalty. I am well acquainted with the King of Kings. I am better known and better understood among the great family above than I am on earth."

Amanda Berry Smith was a Methodist holiness evangelist, missionary to Africa and founder of an orphanage for African American children. Amanda was born into slavery on January 23, 1837 in Long Green, Maryland to parents Samuel Berry and Miriam Matthews Berry, while they were held on adjacent farms. Eventually her father worked for wages at night to buy freedom for himself and his family. Amanda’s attempts to gain a formal education always failed because a school was not available, or it was too difficult for an African American child to get a proper education in a white school.

Who is this Man?

`And a man shall be as an hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.
Isaiah 32:2

What manner of man is this? That he shall be a hiding place? A man who defends the single mother, the poor, and the fatherless that we are not preyed upon by those in authority over us. We are refreshed and comforted with many blessings. He is as rivers of water in a dry place. He is as the shadow of a great rock. It is in Him that we are able to find shelter from the scorching heat of the sun in a dry and weary land. When we are in the midst of contempt and contradiction, it is a great joy to know that He has our back, that we are favoured and smiled upon. When the tempests and storms of guilt beat us up and leave us weary, in Him we find satisfaction and safety.
Who is this Man? That in Him, we find rivers of water for those that hunger and thirst after righteousness? That we find all refreshment and comfort a needy soul desires? We have shelter, not that of a tree, but in the shadow of a great Rock which neither sun nor rain can beat through. As desert dwellers will testify, the covert, hiding-place, or rock receives the battering of the wind and storm. This Man takes on the storm to save those that take shelter in Him.
What manner of Man is this? That He shows so much love and compassion for you and I?
Who is this Man?

This Man is Jesus Christ Himself, the King that reigns in righteousness!

Amen.
